Lyra Young Artist Programme

The Young Artists Programme offers a range of FREE weekly arts activities where children and young people aged 5-25 can learn skills in music, dance, theatre, creative industries and more!

The programme brings our Young Artists together with arts professionals from Scotland and abroad to work side-by-side on world-class projects and productions.

Lyra is looking for new recruits to join in with some exciting performing arts projects that will take place between September 2020 – June 2021. All of the projects are FREE to join and you don’t need any previous experience to sign-up.

While our venue, Artspace, is still closed due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the projects will start online, with weekly sessions taking place on Zoom. We’re planning for a phased return to the venue and are working towards in-person sessions as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Email lyra@lyra.co.uk or call 07400 099762 to join one of the groups or find out more!

Wednesday Performing Arts

with Kasia
Age Group: P3s – P5s
Day/Time: Wednesdays, 4pm – 5pm

Imagine the magical world of circus. You can join in and become whoever you want: from fascinating magicians, to funny clowns and jugglers, wild animals or flying acrobats! In this project we’ll learn circus skills, sing, dance and prepare our own juggling props. We’ll work on our skills as storytellers and performers, investigating what kind of mysterious stories are hidden backstage at the circus…

Experience – Theatre, circus, storytelling and more.

Create – A brand new performance for all your friends and family.

Thursday Performing Arts

with Elspeth
Age Group: P6s – P7s
Day/Time: Thursdays, 4pm – 5pm

This project is about creating a puppetry show inspired by what it’s like to be a child in Greater Craigmillar in 2020. Puppets are a wonderful way of expressing our true thoughts and feelings and can be very powerful storytelling tools. Together we’ll discover the stories you want to tell, learn lots of different ways to make and perform with puppets, and devise a totally unique performance.

Experience – Theatre, storytelling, puppetry and more.

Create – A brand new performance for all your friends and family.

Youth Dance

with Bridie
Age Group: age 8+
Day/Time: Saturdays, 1pm – 2pm

Diving head-first into the Pacific Ocean, we'll be exploring one of the seven wonders of the world, The Great Barrier Reef, to create a unique dance performance. Inspired by the Reef’s vibrant colours, textures and movement, the dancers will be designing and embodying their own sea creatures, forming an aquatic under water band as well as learning to move together like a shoal of fish. Along the way we'll learn about the impact of climate on the Reef and its uncertain future. Expect games, creative tasks, lots of music and fun

Experience – Dance, choreography, costumes and more.

Create – A brand new performance for all your friends and family.

Youth Music

with Daniel
Age Group: age 8+
Day/Time: Saturdays, 1pm – 2pm

This project is about making music, and messages, and mistakes! We all hear music in different ways, and sometimes it’s hard to describe exactly what music sounds like. How can we communicate about music - with words? With pictures? Will other people always know what we mean? Maybe not! Let’s find out…

You don’t need to be an expert musician to get involved in this project, but if you’re learning how to play, how music is made, (and how it sometimes goes wrong), then come along!

Experience – Music, playing instruments, singing, composing and more.

Create – A brand new performance for all your friends and family.
