Extraordinary art in an extraordinary place
Lyra’s vision is to have a positive impact on the lives of children and young people in the community of Greater Craigmillar through engagement with a broad, rich programme of world-class performing arts, regardless of age, race/ ethnicity or socio-economic factors.
Lyra is unique because all its work, from the groups it has formed to the workshops, events and productions it has created, is focused on the best practitioners from around the world working side by side with the youngest members of one of Scotland's most deprived, diverse and exciting communities.
Since 2012 Lyra has been building a community of children and artists who create and produce world-class live performance and art in Greater Craigmillar, Edinburgh. There have been over 15,000 participations by young people with around 2000 individuals taking part in a range of artistic events as part of our ‘Watch, Learn, Create’ framework. Lyra have created 12 artworks and performed more than 125 times at home and abroad.
Lyra runs Artspace, a vibrant venue in the heart of Craigmillar, with 116-seat theatre, a flexible studio and foyer designed by artists with young people. We work with arts professionals from Scotland and abroad to inspire young people, whilst attending to individual pastoral needs (such as behavioural support or home pick-ups) to enable participants to focus on their cultural engagement.
Our child-centred approach has also engaged the wider community, allowing for the growth of genuine and broad community participation over a range of diverse events.
'It is a fantastic place to come for all the children in the area. Safe and full of opportunity with great staff' - Local Parent
